Start by thoroughly inspecting the gel coat for cracks, chips, scratches, or areas of delamination. Identify the damage extent and determine whether the boat repair can be performed as a DIY project or requires professional assistance.

Clean the damaged area with a solvent or acetone to remove dirt, debris, or wax residue. Sand the damaged area with fine-grit sandpaper to create a smooth and clean surface for the gel coat repair.

Following the manufacturer’s instructions, mix the gel coat patching compound. Then, using a putty knife or applicator, apply it to the damaged area. Smooth out the patch to ensure it blends seamlessly with the surrounding gel coat.

Once the gel coat patch has cured, sand the repaired area with progressively finer grit sandpaper to achieve a smooth and even finish. Use a rubbing compound and polish to restore the shine and luster of the gel coat.

To protect it from UV rays and other environmental factors, apply a marine-grade wax or sealant to the repaired area. Regularly maintain and wax the coat to prolong its lifespan and maintain its appearance.
