OU Water Ski Team BT volunteer day Mar 29 15

The Ohio University Water Ski Team did some great and fun volunteer work with us on the last Sunday of March in the Sunday Creek Watershed.  We rerouted the Buckeye Trail to circumvent a major trail washout near the Smokerise Ranch.  We and our partners, like the Buckeye Trail Association, appreciate the efforts of our volunteers greatly.  Here we recognize their efforts and send a heart-felt thanks!

To volunteer with the Sunday Creek Watershed Group for activities (listed below), contact Homer Elliott at homer@ruralaction.org or Michelle Shively at michelle@sundaycreek.org . We can help plan volunteer events for your organizations, groups or for individuals!  Volunteers with Sunday Creek who help for more than 3 hours can receive a free membership in Rural Action.

The Sunday Creek Watershed group frequently hosts special events or hands-on watershed restoration projects. Our work cannot be successful without volunteers to assist with these projects! There are several hands-on watershed monitoring projects needing volunteers, including water quality testing and macroinvertebrate sampling. There is also an opportunity for volunteers to staff various exhibits at county fairs and area festivals throughout the year. Additional volunteer opportunities are also frequently available, and can involve special events, such as the Sunday Creek Watershed Tour, tree plantings, litter pick-ups, and the annual Dash for the Darter 5K Trail Race. Updates regarding volunteer opportunities will be regularly posted to this site.  If you are interested in becoming a volunteer, fill out a Volunteer Profile!

Short-term Volunteer Opportunities

    • Macro Invertebrate Sampling Program -SCWG completes macro invertebrate sampling each summer. As ongoing projects such as mine reclamation and stream bank stabilization improve the health of the watershed, macro invertebrate sampling will supply some of the data needed to determine the benefits these activities have on the ecosystem. Like our other water quality monitoring projects, macro invertebrate sampling programs are designed to serve another purpose just as important: getting the community directly involved with the restoration of our watershed. Contact us, or check the “Upcoming Events” page for more information.
    • Litter Pick-ups- Sunday Creek Watershed Group hosts frequent stream clean-ups throughout the spring and summer as a way to educate local citizens and give back to the community. Local organizations also conduct a yearly ‘stream sweep’ to clean up trash and debris as part of the Ohio River Sweep. To date, over two hundred people have participated in these clean-ups and have picked up many tons of trash in the Sunday Creek Watershed. The Sunday Creek Watershed Group has adopted a section of State Route 155 as part of ODOT’s “Adopt a Highway” program. If your group or family is interested in serving our community by cleaning up litter along a roadway near Sunday Creek, please contact us!
    • Little Cities of the Forest Volunteer Network- Sunday Creek Watershed Group is a proud member of the Little Cities of the Forest Collaborative. Along with our partners, Monday Creek Restoration Project, Sunday Creek Associates, Buckeye/ North County Trail Association, Rural Action Environmental Education, The Little Cities of Black Diamonds Council, and the Wayne National Forest; we maintain a volunteer network for volunteer opportunities in the “Little Cities” region. Be sure to visit it at littlecitiesvolunteers.org.
