Homer Elliott

AmeriCorps Member

Homer Elliott is Sunday Creek Watershed Group’s new AmeriCorps member. He has lived in unglaciated South-Eastern Ohio very near the Sunday Creek Watershed for the past four years, and was first introduced to the watershed itself upon the first day of his arrival building lasting friendships in a number of the watershed’s communities. Most of his time in Ohio before coming to SCWG was spent as a PhD student at Ohio University in the Department of Environmental and Plant Biology where he was involved in studying the ecological impacts of acidic deposition on our area’s forests, forests that are also integral to the health of our Sunday Creek or nearby watersheds of the Hocking and Ohio Rivers, and also studying the highly integrated and coevolved relationships between three families of native Ohio plants and their fungal mutualists. Before that he lived in rural Vermont in the watershed of Brush Brook and the Huntington River while he was at the University Of Vermont where he received his M.S. in Natural Resources by studying the impacts of acidic deposition on Sugar Maple forests in the Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest. Homer grew up in Pennsylvania, and where he was involved in native plant woodland and stream-side restoration and environmental awareness through action and by teaching and educating students and community members. He is excited to bring his skills and experience to Rural Action’s Sunday Creek Watershed Group.
